Fast Facts
- Theatre is from the French "théâtre", from Greek "theatron" (θέατρον), meaning "place of seeing."
- Modern Western theatre consists mostly of "realism," although many other forms, including classical and experimental forms, are frequently performed.
- The earliest recorded theatrical event dates back to 2000 BC with the passion plays of Ancient Egypt.
- The Ancient Greeks were the first to begin to formalize theatre as an art, developing strict definitions of tragedy, comedy, and satyr plays.
- Drama is literally translated as "action."
- The Catholic church created passion plays, mystery plays, and morality plays.
- There were three different types of venues for Elizabethan plays: Inn-yards, Open air Amphitheatres and Playhouses. The Inn-yards were the original venues of plays and many were converted into Playhouses. The Amphitheatres were generally used during the Summer months and then the Acting Troupes moved to the indoor playhouses during the Winter Season.
